If you are traveling through northern Tuscany this year, Carrara is not only about marble quarries and sculpture workshops. Until October 26, 2025, the elegant Palazzo Cucchiari hosts the exhibition “In Gioco. Illusion and Amusement in Italian Art 1850–1950”, a fascinating journey through one hundred years of Italian creativity.

Why this exhibition is worth a stop

One of the highlights of In Gioco is its access to private collections. Unlike works on permanent display in museums, these pieces are rarely available to the public, making your visit a unique opportunity.

More than 110 works – paintings, drawings, and sculptures – bring to life themes of childhood, circus, leisure, and sports, curated by Massimo Bertozzi.

Among the must-see pieces are Le bambine che fanno le signore (1872) by Silvestro Lega, La carrozzella (1916) by Carlo Carrà, and a portrait by Felice Casorati from 1911. Sculptures such as Giacomo Manzù’s Ballerina (1938) and Marino Marini’s Swimmer add movement and vitality to the show.

Four sections to explore

The exhibition unfolds in four thematic sections:

  • Daily amusements
  • Growing up and learning
  • Entertainment and the invention of free time
  • Challenges, competition, and fate

Together, they create a kind of “artistic playground,” where visitors encounter children imitating adults, toys and traditional games, carnival masks, circus performers, and even the dynamism of early 20th-century sports.

Evening openings during Con-Vivere Festival

If you happen to be in Carrara in September, plan your visit around the Con-Vivere Festival. On Thursday, September 11, 2025, as well as on Friday and Saturday nights, the exhibition will stay open until 11:00 PM – the perfect chance to enjoy art after sunset in one of Tuscany’s most intriguing towns.
