A 13th-century Castle in Tuscany Castello dell’Imperatore in Prato stands as a rare and splendid example of architecture from the era of Frederick II, boasting an enthralling history.

Constructed after 1240, the castle was designed by Riccardo da Lentini, the mastermind behind some of the most significant Federician castles in southern Italy.

Built on the site of the original Alberti family castle, the structure served as the residence of the Emperor’s regional representative. It also housed King Enzo, Frederick II’s son, and his stepson Frederick of Antioch, who orchestrated the conquest of Florence from Prato in 1248.

The castle’s square layout spans approximately 40 meters on each side, with square towers at the corners and additional towers along the sides. Its formidable walls, 2.5 meters thick, are constructed from alberese, a distinctive Tuscan stone, and crowned with swallowtail-shaped battlements.

The striking entrance portal showcases the diversity of Federician culture, featuring elements of Tuscan Romanesque-Gothic bicromy, Gothic style with lion-crowned capitals, and classical influence with two half-pillars supporting the pediment.

In recent decades, the municipality of Prato has undertaken extensive restoration, revitalizing the castle to its original splendor and making it accessible to the public.
