The Florence Cathedral, officially known as the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, is one of Italy’s most iconic landmarks and a masterpiece of Renaissance architecture. Its magnificent dome, designed by Brunelleschi, dominates the city skyline and draws millions of visitors each year. Few people know, however, that construction began on September 8, 1296, when the first stone of the cathedral was laid. Every year, Florence celebrates this milestone with the Festa dell’Opera di Santa Maria del Fiore.
