Ride the Rome to Siena train in vintage style: Espresso Siena runs on select fall weekends with panoramic views of Tuscany. This historic service, operated by FS Treni Turistici Italiani in partnership with Fondazione FS, brings back the legendary Gran Confort coaches of the 1970s. Restored with elegance and attention to detail, they transform a simple transfer into an unforgettable journey through central Italy.

A Weekend Escape from Rome to Tuscany

More than just transportation, the Espresso Siena offers an experience that celebrates the art of slow travel. The route begins at Roma Termini, rolling north through Lazio’s countryside before skirting the Argentario coast, crossing the Maremma, and gliding into the UNESCO-listed Val d’Orcia. The trip ends in Siena, one of Tuscany’s most beautiful and historic cities, known for its Gothic cathedral, winding alleys, and medieval Piazza del Campo.

The Gran Confort TEE Coaches

The Gran Confort TEE coaches (Trans Europ Express) were the pinnacle of European luxury rail travel in the 1970s and 1980s. Designed for prestigious international daytime routes, they rivaled the best airlines of the era, offering wide reclining seats in velvet or leather, spacious lounges, wide corridors, air-conditioning, and panoramic double-glazed windows that provided both silence and thermal comfort.

Thanks to a meticulous restoration by Fondazione FS Italiane, these coaches once again offer the same sense of refined travel. Elegant materials, thoughtful design, and a warm atmosphere recreate the golden age of European railways. Boarding the Espresso Siena means not just reaching your destination but savoring the journey itself.

Rome to Siena train: Slow Travel through Tuscany

The Espresso Siena embodies the philosophy of traveling at a gentler pace. Instead of rushing from one city to another, passengers have the chance to enjoy the landscapes unfolding outside the window: rolling vineyards, medieval hill towns, and sweeping valleys. By reviving vintage trains, FS Treni Turistici Italiani promotes sustainable tourism while preserving Italy’s cultural heritage—reminding us that sometimes the journey is just as meaningful as the destination.
