The History of the Walls of Lucca

Built between the 16th and 17th centuries, the Walls of Lucca are an impressive example of Renaissance architecture.

Originally designed for defense, these structures were never actually used to repel invaders, contributing to their remarkable preservation to this day. Their real battle was against time, and they emerged victorious, remaining intact and telling the story of an era.

Interestingly, the walls helped protect the city from a major flood in 1812 showcasing their robustness and utility beyond military purposes.

Architecture of the Walls and Gates to the Historic Center

Spanning over four kilometers, the Walls of Lucca consist of twelve earth curtains and eleven bastions.

Each bastion is about twelve meters high and thirty meters wide at the base, an impressive feat of engineering. The use of laterizio (brick) is a striking feature, reflecting the construction techniques of the time.

Originally, there were only three access gates to the city of Lucca:

  • Porta San Pietro (1565): Today, this gate is located towards the railway station.
  • Porta San Donato (1590): The old Porta San Donato is now within the walls, in Piazza San Donato. This gate remained operational for about 50 years until it was replaced by the new and current one.
  • Porta Santa Maria (1592): This opens onto Piazza Santa Maria.

Currently, there are a total of six gates.

In the early 19th century, Porta Elisa (1811) was added to the east, dedicated to Elisa Baciocchi (Napoleon Bonaparte’s sister and Princess of Lucca from 1805 to 1814).

The most recent, both dating from the first half of the 20th century, are Porta San Jacopo and Porta Sant’Anna (nicknamed by locals as “il buco,” or “the hole,” to distinguish it from the historical gates).

It is also possible to enter the city through passages in the bastions, which were originally direct accesses to the moat for soldiers. Today, most of them have been reopened and are used as pedestrian passages: the sortite.

A Symbol of Tuscany in the World

The Walls of Lucca have become a hub for cultural and social events. They frequently host festivals, art exhibitions, and community gatherings, reflecting the monument’s importance in the everyday life of the city.

This conservation effort ensures that the walls continue to be a living testament to the history of Lucca for future generations.
