Imagine taking a refreshing swim in the sea while gazing at a hilltop castle: this is the enchanting experience awaiting you in Castiglione della Pescaia. This delightful Tuscan town is a must-visit destination, offering a mix of history, nature, and Italian charm.

Castiglione della Pescaia: A Tuscan Treasure

Situated just 100 miles from Florence in the stunning Maremma region, Castiglione della Pescaia is a perfect addition to your summer travel plans, especially from May to September. This quaint town is a favorite among locals, many of whom own summer homes here, making it a bustling hub of activity during the Italian summer holidays.

Kickstart your day on the pristine sandy beaches, whether at a beach club like Skipper or the private beach area of your hotel. During my stay, we chose Hotel Miramare, conveniently located right on the beach, which was ideal for families with children.

After enjoying the sun and sea, explore nearby attractions such as Vetulonia and the Isidoro Falchi Museum, home to incredible artifacts nearly 3,000 years old.

You can also visit the Casa Rossa Ximenes to learn about local history and wildlife, or Punta Ala, known for its beautiful beaches and Golf Club.

In the evening, indulge in an “aperitivo” at one of the many charming bars along the street leading to the historic town center. Don’t miss the climb to the castle, surrounded by medieval stone houses and offering breathtaking panoramic views.

Exploring the Medieval Heart of Castiglione della Pescaia

Enter the old town through the imposing wooden gate, Porta Urbica, rebuilt in 1608. From here, admire the 18th-century Church of Madonna del Giglio, built on the foundations of a former military building. Stroll up Via del Recinto, following the ancient walls to a panoramic spot offering stunning views from the Montes dell’Uccellina to the Diaccia Botrona marshes and Grosseto.

Visit the Church of S. Giovanni, with its unique circular tower that once served military purposes. This church also houses the relics of San Guglielmo d’Aquitania, the town’s patron saint. The castle, first mentioned in 1163, is now privately owned and closed to the public, but its exterior alone is worth the visit.

Award-Winning Beaches

While the sea here might not boast the turquoise hues found elsewhere in Tuscany, its waters are crystal clear and inviting. During my visit, I had the unique pleasure of swimming amidst friendly crabs, even capturing some memorable photos.

It’s also worth noting that Castiglione della Pescaia’s beach has received the “Bandiera Blu” (Blue Flag) for 25 consecutive years, a prestigious environmental recognition.

Getting to Castiglione della Pescaia

Driving is the best way to reach Castiglione della Pescaia, allowing you to quickly access nearby attractions and explore other charming beaches without the hassle of public transportation.

If you opt for public transport, ensure you check schedules in advance.

  • By Car: The fastest route from Florence is via Siena, taking approximately two hours without traffic. An alternative route via Livorno takes about 2 hours and 15 minutes. Search for your next car rental now.
  • By Train: The nearest train stations are in Grosseto or Follonica (check Trenitalia for schedules). From there, take a local bus.
  • By Bus: Take a bus to Grosseto (consult Flixbus for schedules), then a local bus to Castiglione della Pescaia with Autolinee Toscana.

Best Time to Visit

The peak tourist season in Castiglione della Pescaia runs from May to September, the warmest months in Italy.

Note that in May, the sea is still quite cold, gradually warming up as summer progresses. August is the height of the tourist season, coinciding with the Ferragosto holiday (around August 15th), when finding hotel rooms can be challenging and prices are highest.

For a more tranquil experience, consider visiting in June or September. During my visit in May, daytime temperatures averaged a pleasant 81°F, though the sea was still quite chilly.
