The Florence Cathedral, officially known as the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, is one of Italy’s most iconic landmarks and a masterpiece of Renaissance architecture. Its magnificent dome, designed by Brunelleschi, dominates the city skyline and draws millions of visitors each year. Few people know, however, that construction began on September 8, 1296, when the first stone of the cathedral was laid. Every year, Florence celebrates this milestone with the Festa dell’Opera di Santa Maria del Fiore.

Free admission to the Opera del Duomo Museum

On September 8, 2025, visitors to Florence will have the chance to enjoy a unique cultural experience: the Opera del Duomo Museum will remain open with free admission until midnight (last entry at 11:00 PM).

This museum houses some of Florence’s most precious treasures, including original sculptures from the cathedral façade, masterpieces by Donatello, Michelangelo, and Ghiberti, and models used in the design of Brunelleschi’s dome. It’s a rare opportunity to explore the artistic and spiritual heart of the Duomo without buying a ticket or making a reservation.

The celebration also includes special educational tours for families with children aged 5 to 10. These activities, designed to be interactive and engaging, will help younger visitors discover the secrets of the cathedral in a fun way.

Each activity lasts about 90 minutes and will be offered at two different times: 5:00 PM and 6:00 PM. Groups are limited to 12 participants, with the meeting point at the museum entrance in Piazza Duomo, 9.

Participation is free, but advance booking is required (subject to availability) by writing to: edu@duomo.firenze.it.
