How to Get from Florence Airport to the City Center
Florence International Airport (FLR) is also known as Peretola Airport or Amerigo Vespucci Airport.
Florence Airport is conveniently situated close to the city center, which is great news for travelers looking to get to their destination with ease.
Florence Cathedral, also known as the “Duomo,” is only 6 km away, while Santa Maria Novella railway station (S.M.N.) is 5.3 km away. This means that if you don’t have luggage and are a sporty person, you can even walk from the airport to the center of Florence. In just over an hour’s walk, you can reach the S.M.N. station.

The only thing is that we always bring luggage when we travel. Therefore, let’s conserve our energy for sightseeing and use the available means of transportation to get to the airport.

Private Transfer from Florence Airport to the City Center
The most comfortable transportation option is to book a private transfer from Florence Airport to your hotel in the center of Florence.

A professional driver will be waiting for you in the arrivals area of your flight, holding a sign with your name. Then, they will accompany you in a comfortable executive vehicle to your hotel or apartment in the center of Florence.

Taxi from Florence Airport to the City Center
A few steps from the arrivals area of Florence Airport, there is a taxi stand.

But… taxis are not always available, so you may have to wait for an available vehicle or call a taxi (the phone numbers for Florence taxi companies are +39 055.4242 or 055.4390 or 055.4798).
It’s worth knowing: there is a predetermined fare from Florence Airport to the city center and major hotels. This predetermined fare may vary depending on the time and day. For example: on weekdays during the day, it is €22.00. On public holidays during the day, it is €24.00. At night (from 10:00 pm to 6:00 am), it is €25.30. There is also an additional €1.00 for luggage.
It is always recommended to confirm the fare with the driver before getting into the taxi.
The travel time by car from Florence Airport to a hotel in the city center is approximately 15 minutes.
Tram from Florence Airport to the City Center
In 2019, the T2 line of the Tramvia that goes from Florence Airport to the city center was inaugurated.

The Florence tram terminal is approximately a 2-minute walk from the arrivals area of the airport and takes you directly to the city’s main railway station, Santa Maria Novella station.

In 2025, the T2 line expanded, opening the section that extends to Piazza San Marco.
It is practically possible to take the tram from Florence International Airport to the Santa Maria Novella railway station without having to change trams.
The ticket costs €1.70 and can be purchased at an automatic ticket machine or through the “Tabnet” app for Android or Apple smartphones (the app is not currently functioning well as of the writing of this article).

You are allowed to carry one piece of luggage weighing a maximum of 10kg and with a maximum size of 55x30x25cm free of charge.
You may carry larger and heavier luggage (up to a maximum of 80x45x25cm and 20kg) by purchasing an additional luggage ticket, with a limit of two per person.
It is prohibited to transport luggage larger than 80x45x25cm and weighing more than 20kg.
Baby strollers can be transported free of charge.
Note that there is no dedicated space for luggage on board. It is recommended that you position your luggage in a way that does not obstruct the passage of other passengers.
The tram service is operated by the company GEST, and the journey takes approximately 20 minutes.
The tram operates during the following hours:
Monday to Thursday: from 05:00 to 00:04
Fridays and Saturdays: from 05:00 to 01:32
Sundays and holidays: from 05:00 to 00:12
It is advisable to check the timetable directly on the official GEST website. Nevertheless, the timetable valid from January 2025 is shown below.

Car rental companies are generally located on via Palagio degli Spini, approximately a 10-minute walk from Florence Airport.
There is a free shuttle service (navetta, in Italian) every 20 minutes to take you to the rental car location. The shuttle departure point is in the “Sosta Breve” parking lot.
