Florence is a city that exudes beauty, culture, and history at every turn. For many travelers, Florence is a must-visit destination in Italy. It’s no surprise that choosing the right place to stay is an important decision when planning your trip. Whether you prefer a hotel, apartment, or B&B, there are several areas of Florence to consider when booking your accommodations.
Table of Contents
Historic Center
The historic center of Florence is a popular choice for travelers. This area is perfect for those who love to explore on foot, as the city is quite large, and there is so much to see.
If you are planning on using the train as your primary mode of transportation, you may want to stay near the Santa Maria Novella station. This is also an ideal location for those planning to take day trips to nearby cities.
Another benefit of staying in the historic center is the opportunity to enjoy Florence’s nightlife. The city is relatively safe, and it’s delightful to stroll through the alleys surrounding the Duomo, Piazza della Repubblica, and Piazza della Signoria in the evening.
However, if you plan to rent a car, it may be best to choose a hotel outside the historic center. While some hotels offer parking, it can be quite expensive, and the limited traffic zone (ZTL) in the city center may prohibit cars from accessing certain areas.
Ponte Vecchio – Piazza della Repubblica – Piazza Ognissanti Area
If you are looking for a more upscale area to stay in, consider booking a hotel in the Ponte Vecchio, Piazza della Repubblica, or Piazza Ognissanti area. Here, you’ll be in the heart of the city, close to high-end shopping and dining.
The St. Regis Florence (5 stars)
For those who want a view of the Arno and can afford it, the The St. Regis Florence (Piazza Ognissanti) is one of the most luxurious 5-star hotels in Florence.
Located on the banks of the Arno River and with a view that overlooks the Ponte Vecchio and the picturesque hills of Tuscany, The St. Regis Florence is a symbol of elegance and refined hospitality, and has been the preferred stop for connoisseurs of taste and luxury travelers since the 18th century.
With an ideal location in the historic center, this five-star hotel allows you to immerse yourself unparalleled in the cradle of the Renaissance. The luxuriously appointed accommodations of The St. Regis Florence offer ultramodern amenities and services, all enriched by the unmistakable St. Regis butler service, to offer visitors the countless secrets of Florentine culture and art.
Local flavors blend in the Tuscan gourmet cuisine of the hotel’s restaurants and bars, while a variety of elegant event venues lend prestige to weddings, social occasions, and business events. When it’s time to relax, the Iridium Spa suites in partnership with My Blend by Clarins offer unique personalized treatments and more comprehensive therapies.
Hotel degli Orafi (4 stars)
A slightly more affordable option but still with a view is Hotel degli Orafi (Lungarno Archibusieri), a 4-star hotel on the banks of the Arno.
The Hotel degli Orafi, a prestigious residence in the historic center of Florence, offers a wide range of services and amenities.
Upon arrival, you will be welcomed in an atmosphere of warm hospitality. You will be offered a welcome drink that you can enjoy in their panoramic bar with terrace located on the top floor, where you can admire the Arno river and a charming view of Palazzo Vecchio and the Duomo.
Enhanced by background music, you can also taste samples of typical Italian dishes and various snacks, accompanied by D.O.C.G. wines. The buffet breakfast will be served in the ancient ballroom, adorned with original 19th-century frescoes and with views of the Arno river and Via dei Georgofili.
Among the many beauties to admire and the conveniences that the hotel offers, you will also find a reading room/library, whose recent restoration has revealed original 12th-century frescoes. Located on the second floor of the hotel, it offers a wide selection of books in different languages and provides a pleasant and relaxing environment. This room is also equipped with Wi-Fi and an “Internet point” with a fixed workstation.
It is possible to reach the Hotel by car and park in a secure garage affiliated with the hotel that will take care of the pickup and return of your car.

In the 16th century, a new building incorporating the 13th-century tower was constructed on the same site. The Torrigiani family has owned the property since 1559 and lived there for over two centuries before leasing it to hoteliers in the first half of the 19th century.

Hotels in Florence in the Piazzale Michelangelo area
The Piazzale Michelangelo is renowned for its spectacular panoramic view of the center of Florence. Surrounding the Piazzale Michelangelo are some tourist attractions, such as the Giardino dell’Iris and the Palazzo Pitti.
In my humble opinion, it only makes sense to stay in this area if you choose one of those impressive luxury houses – which Italians call Villas – such as the Villa Cora (5 stars, Vle. Machiavelli). Note that depending on the season, in these villas, you can find prices equivalent to those of lower-rated hotels in areas such as the Duomo.
The biggest difficulty for those who stay in this area is transportation because it is an uphill and winding area. Depending on the hotel’s location, it may require taking a taxi, bus, or walking a lot. Therefore, use Google Maps to calculate the distance from the hotel to places like the Ponte Vecchio on foot.
Villa Cora (5 stars L)
Villa Cora is a grand hotel located on the hills just outside the historical center of Florence. The villa is an aristocratic residence built in the late XIX century and boasts a strong eclectic decor that provides the villa with different, sometimes even bizarre, artistic styles. Throughout the years, Villa Cora has become one of the major cultural and cosmopolitan symbols of Florence, and it has hosted international guests of great importance, such as Princess Eugenia and the Russian composer Tchaikovsky.
The hotel has a total of 44 accommodations, between rooms and suites, divided into the villa and two adjacent buildings, which were restored to conserve the original architectural style as much as possible. Each floor has its own unique style, from the marvelous frescoes on the “noble floor” to the Moorish spirit on the third floor. The Villino Eugenia, a small guesthouse overlooking the Boboli Gardens, offers 14 different accommodations decorated and furnished according to the bourgeois styles of the late 19th century.
Villa Cora offers a range of services including a reception/concierge available 24/7, free Wi-Fi, breakfast room, bar, meeting room, calidarium, sauna, hammam, massages by appointment, an equipped gym, pool, and Le Bistrot restaurant. The hotel also has a large rooftop terrace perfect for events, a dedicated elevator, antique decorations and furniture, parking, and shuttle service.
The villa’s park overlooks the Boboli Gardens, and the SPA is located inside the Villino Eugenia. Lastly, La Follie, a small guesthouse located at the edge of the park that surrounds Villa Cora, provides complete and total privacy with only 2 rooms. Villa Cora is part of The Leading Hotels of the World, an international collection of luxury independent hotels.
Hotels in Florence outside the historical center
If you’re seeking accommodation near Careggi Hospital to visit a patient or undergo medical treatment, this is the optimal choice. Nevertheless, if you’re in search of a hotel situated outside the historical center, there are alternative areas that might be more appropriate.
One favorable option is the residential district of Campo di Marte. It’s situated in proximity to Florence’s historic center and the Fiorentina Stadium. Moreover, there is a train station providing direct access to Santa Maria Novella station in only 7 minutes or directly to other alluring cities in Italy. Despite being a residential area, parking may be a bit challenging to find, but it’s feasible to reach it by car without any issues.
Another residential neighborhood that is a valid alternative is Rifredi. The area has a train station, which takes you directly to Santa Maria Novella station in only 5 minutes. Nonetheless, it’s a quieter residential area than Campo di Marte, and there are fewer tourist attractions in the vicinity.
