Italo Family: Kids Travel Free on High-Speed Trains in Italy

Traveling through Italy by train with children can get expensive fast, especially if your itinerary includes several cities. That is why the Italo Family offer may be worth checking before you book your next trip around Tuscany or beyond.

With this fare, children under 14 travel for free, while adults get 50% off the Flex fare. The offer is designed for small families or mini-groups traveling together on Italo high-speed trains, including selected train + Itabus combined tickets.

For travelers planning a route from Florence to Rome, Florence to Naples, Florence to Milan, or other Italian cities served by Italo, this can be a practical way to reduce transportation costs, as long as your plans are already quite firm.

How the Italo Family offer works

The Italo Family offer is available for groups of 2 to 4 passengers. The group must include at least one adult over 18, and children who have not yet turned 14 can travel for free.

Adults receive a 50% discount based on the Flex fare price. The offer is valid in Smart class, which is Italo’s economy class.

To use the offer, you need to choose your journey, check the available fare options during the booking process, select Italo Family if it appears, and complete the purchase. The fare is subject to availability, so it will only show up if your trip meets the required conditions and there are eligible seats available.

Children from 0 to 36 months who travel on an adult’s lap and do not need their own seat are not counted as passengers for this offer.

A real example: Florence to Rome with two children

In the booking example shown here, a trip from Firenze Santa Maria Novella to Roma Termini for 3 passengers costs €22.95 in total with the Italo Family fare.

The group includes 1 adult and 2 children. The adult pays €22.95, while the 2 children travel for free.

This does not mean that the same price will always be available. Train fares change depending on the route, date, time, demand, and availability. But it is a useful example of why this fare can be interesting for families traveling by train in Italy.

When you need to book

The Italo Family offer is valid only for tickets purchased at least 15 days before departure.

This is an important detail. If you are planning a family trip to Tuscany, Rome, Venice, Naples, Milan, or another Italian destination, it is worth checking train prices as soon as your travel dates are confirmed.

The offer can be especially useful during school holidays, long weekends, and peak travel periods, but availability may be limited.

Routes excluded from the offer

The Italo Family offer is valid on all Italo routes except the following:

Bologna – Florence
Bologna – Reggio Emilia
Ferrara – Florence

The offer is valid only for the purchase of an Italo high-speed train ticket and/or an Italo high-speed train + Itabus combined ticket.

Can you change an Italo Family ticket?

Yes, but there are restrictions.

Find the best available fare for your family trip

Tickets purchased with the Italo Family offer can be modified up to 72 hours before the scheduled departure time. You can change the travel date, time, and/or class, but you will have to pay a 60% fee, plus any fare difference based on the prices available at the time of the change.

Name changes are also subject to a fee, and the age conditions for the free child ticket must still be respected.

Is the Italo Family ticket refundable?

No. The Italo Family offer is non-refundable.

That is the main point to consider before booking. This fare can be a good deal if your travel plans are already fixed, but it is not ideal if you are still deciding your itinerary or if there is a good chance your plans may change.

Documents and checks on board

Passengers must be able to provide the ticket code to Italo staff on board. A valid identity document may also be requested to verify the ticket holder and confirm that the conditions of the Italo Family offer are respected.

This is particularly important because the offer depends on the age of the passengers. If you are traveling with children, keep their documents available during the trip.

Is Italo Family worth it?

For families traveling around Italy by train, the Italo Family offer can be a smart way to save money, especially when traveling with one or more children under 14.

It is particularly useful for routes connecting major cities, such as Florence and Rome, where high-speed trains can save a lot of time compared to driving.

The downside is that the ticket is non-refundable and must be purchased at least 15 days in advance. So the best strategy is simple: use Italo Family when your travel dates are confirmed, but compare it with other fares if you need more flexibility.
