Artemisia Gentileschi in Florence: Tickets and Guide to the Museo degli Innocenti Exhibition

Florence is where Artemisia Gentileschi stopped being a famous painter’s daughter and became a name of her own. A new exhibition tells that story in the city where it happened.

From October 20, 2026 to April 4, 2027, the Museo degli Innocenti in Florence hosts Artemisia Gentileschi a Firenze, the first show at the museum devoted to her Florentine years. Two masterpieces by Caravaggio are on view too.

It is also open every day, Mondays included, which makes it one of the easiest major exhibitions to fit into a Florence itinerary.

Who Was Artemisia Gentileschi?

Artemisia Gentileschi was one of the leading painters of the Italian Baroque. She trained in Rome with her father, the painter Orazio Gentileschi, and came to Florence after a public trial that made her the subject of gossip in Rome.

Florence gave her a fresh start. According to the exhibition organizers, she became the first woman admitted to the Accademia delle Arti del Disegno, worked on commissions for the Medici family and knew Galileo Galilei and the leading artists of the day.

That turning point is the whole focus of the show.

Inside the Exhibition

The exhibition is curated by Costantino d’Orazio, Cristina Acidini and Sandro Bellesi. Next to Artemisia’s own paintings, it brings in the 17th-century Florentine painters she worked alongside, names most visitors have never heard of:

  • Cristofano Allori
  • Francesco Furini
  • Cesare Dandini
  • Giovanni Martinelli
  • Filippo Tarchiani
  • Fabrizio Vannini
  • Lorenzo Lippi
  • Volterrano
  • Jacopo Vignali

The poster image is Judith and Her Maidservant with the Head of Holofernes. And two Caravaggio masterpieces are part of the show, a nod to the painter whose style shaped hers.

Save some energy for the end: your ticket covers the whole Museo degli Innocenti, with more than four floors to explore.

Opening Hours and Holiday Schedule

The exhibition is open daily from 9:30 AM to 7:00 PM. The ticket office closes one hour earlier, at 6:00 PM.

Holiday hours:

  • November 1, December 8 and December 26, 2026: 9:30 AM to 7:00 PM
  • December 24 and December 31, 2026: 9:30 AM to 3:00 PM
  • December 25, 2026: closed
  • January 1, 2027: 12:30 PM to 7:00 PM
  • January 6, 2027: 9:30 AM to 7:00 PM
  • March 28 (Easter) and March 29, 2027 (Easter Monday): 9:30 AM to 7:00 PM

Since it opens on Mondays, it’s a great pick for the day the Uffizi and the Accademia are closed. More ideas in our guide to Florence on Mondays.

How to Get to Museo degli Innocenti

The museum is at Piazza della Santissima Annunziata 13, a short walk from the Duomo and very close to the Accademia Gallery.

From Santa Maria Novella station it’s about a 20-minute walk. To get to Florence by train, check times and fares on Trenitalia or Trainline. Keep your high-speed train ticket: it’s worth €4 off at the exhibition box office.

Plan an Artemisia Day in Florence

Make it a full Artemisia day. The Uffizi Gallery owns one of her most famous paintings, Judith Slaying Holofernes.

The museum is steps from the Accademia, so Michelangelo’s David fits easily into the same morning or afternoon. Another big show this season is Broken at Palazzo Strozzi, on view through January 24, 2027. Visiting in late fall? See our tips for Florence in November.
