Simply Red is coming back to Lucca in summer 2027, and this time the stage sits right under the city’s Renaissance walls.

The band plays on Friday, July 30, 2027, as part of the 30th anniversary edition of the Lucca Summer Festival. It is the band’s only Tuscan date on the Summer Funk ’27 tour, and tickets are already on sale.

Summer Funk ’27: What to Expect

Summer Funk ’27 is the band’s first tour after its 40th anniversary celebrations in 2025.

That anniversary run sold out close to 50 dates across the UK, Europe and Latin America, and became the live album, film and box set Holding Back the Years: 40 Years of Simply Red, Live in Santiago.

According to the festival, Mick Hucknall said the band can’t wait to get back on the road in summer 2027 and play historic venues around the UK and Europe, with a set built to get people up and dancing.

The festival has flagged hits like Fairground, Something Got Me Started and Money’s Too Tight (To Mention). Here is the first of them, one of the band’s biggest songs of the 1990s.

On stage with Hucknall are Ian Kirkham (sax, EWI and horns), Kenji Suzuki (guitar), Kevin Robinson (trumpet, horns and percussion), Roman Roth (drums), Gary Sanctuary (keyboards) and Orefo Orakwue (bass).

The numbers behind the band are hard to argue with: five UK number-one albums, a number-one single plus nine more top 10 hits, three BRIT Awards, two Ivor Novello Awards and the MOBO Award for Outstanding Achievement.

In the US, Simply Red scored two Billboard Hot 100 number ones and three Grammy nominations. The band’s 1991 album Stars was the best-selling album in the UK and Europe two years running.

It all started in Manchester in 1985 with Picture Book, the debut album that gave us Money’s Too Tight (To Mention) and Holding Back the Years.

Seven Nights at the Lucca Walls

Lucca is familiar ground for Mick Hucknall: July 30, 2027 will be his seventh appearance at the Lucca Summer Festival.

For the 30th anniversary, the whole festival moves to the area of the city walls, the Mura Storiche, instead of splitting shows with Piazza Napoleone as in past years. The Simply Red show takes place on the Viale Carducci side of the walls.

Ten days earlier, on July 20, the same stage hosts Take That. You will find the rest of the line-up, as it is announced, in our guide to the Lucca Summer Festival 2027.

Lucca is easy to reach by regional train from Florence and Pisa, and the station sits just outside the walls. If you would rather not rush back after the encore, have a look at our pick of the best hotels in Lucca: rooms go fast on festival nights.

Make a Weekend of It in Lucca

A late-July concert is a good excuse to stay a few days. A few ideas to build around the show:

Walk or cycle the top of the walls, a tree-lined loop around the whole old town, then get lost in the streets around Piazza dell’Anfiteatro and climb the Guinigi Tower for the view. Our Lucca guide has the rest.

The same week, the Puccini Festival is in full swing at Torre del Lago, near Viareggio, with open-air opera from July 9 to August 29, 2027.

And if you want another big night out in Tuscany, Andrea Bocelli sings at the Teatro del Silenzio in Lajatico on July 22 and 24, 2027: see Andrea Bocelli in Tuscany 2027.

Tip: Pisa is a short train ride from Lucca, worth it for a photo with the Leaning Tower.
