Fifty Years of Toto, From North Hollywood to Lucca

Toto’s story began on January 7, 1977, when David Paich and Jeff Porcaro joined Steve Lukather, Bobby Kimball, Steve Porcaro and David Hungate at Davlen Studios in North Hollywood to record the first demos for their debut album. Fifty years later, the band has sold more than 50 million albums worldwide.

Toto IV won the band six Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year and Record of the Year for Rosanna. In Lucca, the 50 Anniversary Tour brings those songs together in a set of classics that, according to the festival, speaks to every generation.

Africa, Rosanna and Hold the Line: A Night to Sing Along

Expect the whole crowd to sing along. Africa has passed two billion streams on Spotify and Hold the Line has passed one billion. Across the catalog, Toto has more than nine billion streams, and the festival says more than half of that audience is 34 or younger. So the crowd will mix fans from 1977 with people who found the band last week.

The current line-up features Steve Lukather on guitar and vocals and Joseph Williams on lead vocals, joined by Warren Ham (horns, percussion, vocals), John Pierce (bass), Keith Carlock (drums), and Dennis Atlas and Rai Thistlethwayte (keyboards and vocals). Of the musicians who recorded the first demos in 1977, only Lukather is on that list.

With sales opening almost nine months ahead of the show, you have plenty of time to pick your sector, your hotel and your flights.

The concert is at night, which leaves the day free to explore. Start with the Renaissance walls, now a tree-lined park around the historic center and exactly where Toto will play. Then stop by Piazza dell’Anfiteatro, an oval square built on the foundations of a Roman amphitheater, and climb the Guinigi Tower, famous for the oak trees on its roof.

The San Martino Cathedral, with its Romanesque façade, is a short walk away. If your schedule allows, add a side trip to Pisa and the Leaning Tower, or pair the concert with the Puccini Festival in nearby Torre del Lago.
