Planning a day trip from Florence on Wednesday, October 14, 2026? Check the clock first. A general strike has been called across Tuscany that day, and both regional trains and local buses have their own strike windows.
The good news: neither stops for the whole day. If you know the times, you can still save your plans.
In short: on Wednesday, October 14, trains may be cancelled or changed from 9:01 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and Autolinee Toscane buses may not run from 8:20 a.m. to 12:20 p.m. The Florence tram and air travel are not part of the strike. At the Uffizi, opening is only guaranteed from 1:30 p.m. Strikes can be called off at the last minute, so check again the night before.

Day trips from Florence: how to plan around the strike
Trains and buses together are what make most day trips from Florence work, so October 14 is the day they are most at risk. That goes for Pisa, Siena, Lucca, Arezzo, Livorno and the smaller towns in between.
- Can you swap days? Moving the day trip to Tuesday or Thursday is the simplest fix, especially if your train ticket can be changed.
- Keeping the date? Take a train that leaves before 9:01 a.m. and plan to come back after 5:00 p.m. Trenitalia warns that some trains may also be affected just before and after the strike window.
- Walk once you arrive. Local buses may not run until 12:20 p.m. In Pisa, for example, the bus from the station to the Leaning Tower may not come.
- Join an organized tour. Private tour companies usually do not join this kind of strike, so day tours from Florence with their own van or coach are a good way around it. As this strike also covers the private sector, check with the operator before you go.

Trains: what Trenitalia says
The Trenitalia notice covers the FS Group staff in Tuscany. From 9:01 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., trains may be cancelled or changed.
Regional trains can be affected in Tuscany and in neighboring regions, and so can trains run by Trenitalia Tper, the regional operator in Emilia-Romagna.
Under Trenitalia’s minimum service rules, regional trains on weekdays are guaranteed from 6:00 to 9:00 a.m. and from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. A train already traveling when the strike starts will reach its final stop if it can get there within one hour.
Refund or rebook: if you decide not to travel, Trenitalia refunds Frecce and Intercity tickets up to the departure time of your train. For regional trains, the deadline is midnight on Tuesday, October 13. You can also rebook on a similar train as soon as seats are available, on the app, on the Trenitalia website, at the ticket office or by calling the toll-free number 800 89 20 21.
Buses in Florence, Pisa, Siena and beyond
Autolinee Toscane runs city and intercity buses all over Tuscany, and it has confirmed a four-hour strike across the region.
- Drivers: 8:20 a.m. to 12:20 p.m.
- Office staff, including ticket offices: the last four hours of their shift.
How many buses actually run depends on how many workers join. At the last 24-hour strike called by the CGIL transport union, on October 3, 2025, turnout was 22.26%, according to the company. There is no list of guaranteed lines, so have a plan B.

Getting to Florence and Pisa airports
Air travel is excluded from the strike, so flights from Florence and Pisa are not affected by it. The tricky part is getting to the airport.
- Florence: GEST, the company that runs the tram, is excluded from the strike, so the T2 line between the airport and the city center should run. With buses off the road, expect fuller trams and slower traffic.
- Pisa: if your route to or from Pisa Airport includes a train or an Autolinee Toscane bus, travel outside the strike windows or book a taxi or private transfer.
Museums: the Uffizi opens only in the afternoon
Because this is a general strike, museum staff can join it too. The Uffizi Galleries warn of possible closures and only guarantee two openings:
- the Uffizi Gallery, from 1:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.;
- Boboli Gardens, for the whole day.
Last entry is one hour before closing at both. Palazzo Pitti is not on the list. If you have a morning Uffizi ticket, read the official Uffizi notice and contact your ticket seller.
At the time of writing, the Galleria dell’Accademia, home of Michelangelo’s David, the Bargello museums, Palazzo Vecchio and Florence’s other city museums, the Duomo in Florence, the Piazza dei Miracoli in Pisa and Siena Cathedral had not posted any strike notice on their official websites. That does not guarantee normal hours, as notices can come out the day before.
Where to check on the day
- Trains: the Trenitalia service updates, the Trenitalia app and the toll-free number 800 89 20 21.
- Buses: the Autolinee Toscane strike notice.
- Cancellations: the Ministry of Transport strike calendar. If the strike is called off, it disappears from the list or is marked as revoked.
