What is Calcio Storico Fiorentino?

More than just historical football, Calcio Storico Fiorentino is a combination of soccer, rugby, and wrestling, divided into four teams. Each team represents a historic district of Florence:

  • Verdi (Greens) from San Giovanni
  • Azzurri (Blues) from Santa Croce
  • Rossi (Reds) from Santa Maria Novella
  • Bianchi (Whites) from Santo Spirito

Calcio Storico has deep roots in the history of ball games. Its origins can be traced back to the Sferomachia of the ancient Greeks and the Harpastum of the Romans.

Tickets for Calcio Storico Fiorentino Available from May 23

During the medieval period, football was a popular activity in the streets of Florence. One of the most famous episodes occurred on February 17, 1530, when the Florentines, exhausted by hunger and the siege of Charles V, decided to play football in the square as a way to mock the enemy and show their resilience.

Today, Calcio Storico is the most intense competition involving the city, a unique spectacle in its genre, and a strong element of identity for the citizens.

Besides the exciting matches, Calcio Storico is accompanied by historical parades with traditional costumes, flags, and music, providing a deep dive into the rich cultural heritage of Florence. This event is an excellent opportunity for tourists and travelers to witness a living part of the city’s history.

  2. Hi Yvette,

I love your enthusiasm! As of now, there haven’t been any official updates about the 2025 edition of the Calcio Storico Fiorentino, but it’s very likely to happen. Usually, ticket details are announced a bit later in the year—sometimes after Easter—so we’re keeping an eye on it and will update the article as soon as there’s news.

For reference, last year the tickets went on sale on May 23 for the matches on June 1 and 2, so it might follow a similar timeline this year.

I totally get the stress of waiting (especially for such an epic birthday surprise!), but don’t worry—if you want, feel free to check back in a few weeks to remind me, and I’ll share any updates I have. Fingers crossed we’ll get some info soon!

Best of luck with the planning!

  3. Hi Barbara,

I will visite Florence for dates of the semi finals in june. Is there already an update regarding the sale of tickets? I had read that it was only possible to buy them phisically in Florence is this true or is there also an option to buy them online?

hope you could help me and have a blessed day 🙂

  4. Hi Wijnand & Simone,

Thank you so much for your message! As of today, tickets are not on sale yet, but the official announcement is expected in the next few days. Last year, it was possible to buy tickets online as well as in person in Florence, so I believe there will be an online option again this year. However, no official confirmation has been released yet.

I’ll keep an eye on the updates and share more information as soon as it’s available. Enjoy planning your trip, and have a wonderful day!

    Best regards,
    Barbara
