3rd option: Train from Fiumicino Airport to Florence

Inside Fiumicino Airport, there is a train station named “Fiumicino Aeroporto“.

To reach Florence, you have the option of taking a direct high-speed train from Fiumicino Airport, or alternatively, you can travel to a station in Rome and then transfer to a second train bound for Florence.

Be mindful that changing trains can be significant, especially if you’re carrying a lot of luggage. When changing trains, you’ll need to carry your bags from one platform to another at the transfer station.

The ideal option is to take the direct train, but this is only offered by the company Trenitalia, and there is just one direct train that leaves Fiumicino Airport at 13:53 and arrives at Florence S.M.Novela at 16:11 (a journey of 2 hours and 18 minutes).

When purchasing your ticket, all options will indicate “1 cambio” or “2 cambi” (which are the train changes). The only one that just has “dettagli” is the direct train, which will appear like this:

As you can see, the direct train from Fiumicino Airport to Florence Santa Maria Novella also stops at Rome Termini and Rome Tiburtina. The primary advantage is that there’s no need to change trains.

However, sometimes it might be worth changing trains. For example, an earlier train time may be more practical. Suppose your flight is scheduled to arrive at the airport at 7 in the morning; it might not make sense to wait there until lunchtime for the train, thus wasting precious time in Italy, right?

Italotreno also offers options for high-speed train travel from Rome to Florence and directly sells the segment from the Airport to Rome (which is operated by Trenitalia). Lately, Italotreno has been offering promotions with prices lower than Trenitalia’s.

There are also promotional fare options for those who buy in advance (normally 3 days in advance is enough).

4th option: Car Rental at Fiumicino Airport

Renting a car at Fiumicino Airport is perfect for those who want to go on a road trip in Italy. However, depending on the number of hours of your flight, consider the possibility of resting a bit, maybe by staying at a hotel in Fiumicino Airport or nearby, before facing another 3 hours of driving to Florence.

I’ve seen people who spent over 20 hours flying to Rome Airport, between various connections, and arrived so tired that they were no longer able to drive. So evaluate your case carefully and remember that you are on vacation and the goal is to have fun and enjoy!

For those who love to drive and dream of traveling on modern Italian highways, you’ll have the opportunity to drive on one of the best roads in Italy.

The A1 – Autostrada del Sole – that connects Rome to Florence is a superhighway in great condition and maintenance. Just remember that there are several speed cameras along the way, and the fines are steep, so avoid playing F1 driver, okay? For your information: in Italy, speed cameras are called “autovelox.”

Another tip: rent a hotel in Florence with parking inside the hotel or nearby, and if it’s free, even better, because parking in the streets in the city center is paid, and parking can cost more than Euro 20.00 per day easily.

Duration: The car trip from Rome FCO Airport to Florence takes approximately 3 hours.

Price: The cost of car rental depends on several variables, from the size of the vehicle to the number of days you will keep the car or whether you will rent and return it in the same location or in different cities.

Let’s say that starting from Euro 50.00 per day, you can rent a mini car like a Fiat 500 for 2 people. In addition to the rental cost of the car, you must add the fuel (the price has varied quite a bit, in March 2023 it is around Euro 1.90 per liter of gas) + toll fees (approximately Euro 20.00) + parking fees in Florence.

Tip: You don’t need a car to explore the center of Florence, and there are several tour options in Florence and its surroundings that already include transportation. The car is recommended for those who want to explore Tuscany on their own and visit cities off the traditional tourist route and with few public transport options, such as the Chianti area, Val d’Orcia, the village of Pitigliano in Maremma Tuscany, and the Mugello territory…

5th option: Bus from Fiumicino Airport to Florence

There is also the option to travel from Fiumicino Airport to Florence by bus.

Flixbus, in partnership with TuscanyTips, is one of the companies offering the Rome Fiumicino – Florence route.

However, be aware: depending on the time of year, it may be necessary to change buses. Always look for the option “senza cambio,” meaning no bus change is required. When it says “1 cambio,” it means you will have to change buses once. The change could be at Rome Tiburtina or even in Siena.

Price: Bus tickets cost 19.90 Euros per journey, although sometimes there are promotions for 1.99 Euros.

Itabus is currently not offering bus options between Rome Fiumicino and Florence. However, an alternative is to take a train to Rome and then catch an Itabus from Rome to Florence.

6th option: Taxi from Fiumicino Airport to Florence

Unlike the Fiumicino – Rome city center route, there is no predetermined fare to go from Fiumicino Airport to Florence.

This means you have two options: get in a taxi and run the meter, paying the indicated amount at the end, or find a taxi driver willing to take you to Florence and negotiate the price directly on the spot, which may not be exactly simple if you are not fluent in Italian and are exhausted after a long intercontinental flight.

You can find taxi stands at the exits of terminals 1 and 3 at Fiumicino Airport.

If you want to go from Rome FCO Airport to Florence by taxi:

Duration: the trip from Fiumicino Airport to the center of Florence takes approximately 3 hours.

Price: Doing some quick math based on the taxi fares in Rome, you will spend Euro 1.70 x 300 km = Euro 510.00 + a fixed fee that varies from Euro 3.50 to Euro 7.50 depending on the day of the week + a baggage supplement of Euro 1.00 for the second bag onwards, and you will probably regret not having pre-booked a professional private transfer NCC in advance, perhaps with a English-speaking driver!
