Italo, Italy’s private high-speed train company, sells a fare called eXtra Magic that takes up to 70% off the price of its Flex fare. From Florence it is one of the cheapest ways to reach Rome, Milan, Venice or Naples: on the dates we checked, a Florence to Rome day trip cost €29.80 round trip instead of €91.80.

What is Italo eXtra Magic?
eXtra Magic is a fare, not a limited-time sale: it shows up next to Flex, Economy and Low Cost when you search for a train on Italo’s website, as long as there are discounted seats left on that train. The discount is calculated on the Flex fare, which is Italo’s most expensive and most flexible option.
It is available in two of Italo’s four classes: Smart (economy) and Prima Business. Club Executive and Salotto do not have it.
eXtra Magic rules
These are the conditions listed on the official eXtra Magic page, checked on October 26, 2026:
- Up to 70% off compared with the Flex fare;
- valid in Smart and Prima Business;
- tickets cannot be changed or refunded;
- seats are limited and vary by route and by the days you choose;
- you earn Italo Più points on eXtra Magic tickets.
Because the ticket is non-refundable, eXtra Magic makes sense once your plans are fixed. If you might need to change the time, Flex lets you do that.
How much you save from Florence: November 2026 prices
We ran real searches on Italo’s website for Tuesday, November 17, 2026, for one adult. Prices are per person, per route, comparing the cheapest eXtra Magic seat with the Flex fare on the same train:
| Route (Smart) | eXtra Magic | Flex | Savings |
|---|---|---|---|
| Florence → Rome | €14.90 | €45.90 | 68% |
| Rome → Florence | €14.90 | €45.90 | 68% |
| Florence → Milan | €17.90 | €49.90 | 64% |
| Florence → Venice | €18.90 | €52.90 | 64% |
| Florence → Naples | €23.90 | €69.90 | 66% |
In Prima Business the savings are similar: on the 10:03 Florence to Rome train, eXtra Magic cost €19.90 against €55.90 for Flex.
Prices checked on October 26, 2026. They change with the date, the time and how many seats are left, so you may find different prices when you search.
How to book eXtra Magic step by step
Here is how we booked a day trip from Florence to Rome. The Italo website opens in English.
1. Search for your trip. Choose Firenze S.M.Novella as departure and Roma Termini as arrival, pick the dates, set the number of passengers and click Search.

2. Pick the outbound train and the eXtra Magic fare. Click on a departure time to open the fare table. eXtra Magic is the last row: on the 10:03 train it was €14.90 in Smart, against €45.90 for Flex. The train reaches Roma Termini at 11:40.

The table also shows a Day Return fare (€30.90 on this train), but the page lists prices “per adult, per route”, so it costs more than eXtra Magic.
3. Pick the return train. Click Continue and repeat for the way back. The 19:25 from Rome was also €14.90, arriving in Florence at 20:57. The Your journey panel shows the total: €29.80 for the round trip, with almost eight hours in Rome.

4. Finish the booking. Click Continue, enter the passenger details and pay.
