Why the Lucca concert stands out

This is not simply another stop on a long Italian arena run. The festival presents Lucca as Carey’s only Italian concert announced for 2027, as well as her debut at the event. That combination is likely to draw fans from well beyond Tuscany.

The setting is part of the appeal. Instead of a conventional indoor venue, the stage sits beside the fortifications that encircle Lucca’s old town. The walls are a public park during the day; on major festival nights, the surrounding area becomes one of Tuscany’s largest open-air music venues.

The concert also opens a busy stretch in the Lucca Summer Festival’s 2027 schedule. The anniversary lineup includes major international names across several July dates, making Lucca a useful base for travelers considering more than one show.

From We Belong Together to Here For It All

Carey’s catalog gives the production plenty to work with. Hero, Fantasy, Always Be My Baby, My All, Without You, and We Belong Together represent very different sides of a career spanning more than 35 years.

She has sold more than 200 million albums worldwide and placed 19 singles at number one on the Billboard Hot 100, 18 of which she wrote or co-wrote. Her honors include five Grammy Awards, ten American Music Awards, induction into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, and recognition as the 2026 MusiCares Person of the Year.

The 2027 performance also arrives after a fresh chapter in her recording career. Here For It All, her 16th studio album and first in seven years, blends pop, R&B, gospel, and hip-hop. It reached the Billboard 200 Top 10 and topped both the Top Album Sales and Top R&B Albums charts.

Type Dangerous, one of the singles from the album era, brings a playful, self-aware edge to that newer material. The official video was directed by Joseph Kahn and includes a cameo by MrBeast.

No official Lucca setlist has been released. The songs highlighted by the festival suggest a career-spanning evening, but travelers should not treat any individual track as guaranteed before the concert takes place.

Planning a concert weekend in Lucca

For an international visitor, the best version of this trip is not a rushed evening commute. Stay overnight and let the concert anchor a day or two in the city. Our Lucca guide brings together transportation, sights, and practical planning, while our hotel guide helps narrow down where to sleep.

Before the show, walk or rent a bike for a circuit of the Renaissance walls. The elevated path is shaded in many sections and offers an easy introduction to the city without requiring a packed sightseeing schedule.

Inside the old town, stop at Piazza dell’Anfiteatro, then climb the Guinigi Tower for its rooftop oaks and city views. Leave time for an early dinner rather than counting on a full meal immediately before the show, when restaurants and streets near the venue become busier.

If you have another day, Pisa is close enough for a side trip, and the Puccini Festival in Torre del Lago offers a completely different kind of summer music experience nearby.

Getting to the historic walls venue

By train: Lucca station is just south of the historic center. The Viale Carducci concert area is walkable from the station, making rail the most convenient option for many visitors coming from Pisa, Florence, or Viareggio. Check the return schedule carefully: a 9:00 p.m. concert will end late, and the last useful train may leave before the crowd clears.

By car: Do not plan to drive into the historic center. Lucca has restricted-traffic zones, and festival traffic can slow the roads around the walls. Choose an official parking area outside the center and allow time to walk to the entrance.

Where to stay: A room inside the walls gives you the easiest post-concert walk, but accommodations just outside the southern side of the center can also work well for the station and Viale Carducci. Book early: a one-night stay can be easier and safer than relying on a late connection after a major open-air show.
