Honoring Giants in Art and Architecture

The 2023 Florence Biennale will pay homage to two of the most influential figures in art and architecture: American photographer David LaChapelle and Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava.

Each will be awarded for their significant contributions to their respective fields – LaChapelle with the “Lorenzo il Magnifico Award” and Calatrava with the “Leonardo da Vinci Award.”

On October 17, attendees will have the chance to witness a curated selection of LaChapelle’s work from 2009 to 2023, including an unreleased series in collaboration with renowned rapper Tedua. Both LaChapelle and Tedua will grace the award ceremony with their presence.

On October 19, Calatrava’s exhibition will take center stage. He will present about ten project models for Italy – both realized and conceptual – spanning cities like Florence, Venice, Rome, Reggio Emilia, Genoa, and the Marina d’Arechi port-island close to Salerno.

Honoring Lifetime Contributions and Remembering the Inimitable

In addition to these, two other creative minds, Milanese artist Amalia Del Ponte and Peruvian painter Enrique Galdos Rivas, will be recognized for their impactful careers.

Del Ponte is set to unveil a piece created specifically for the Biennale.

Meanwhile, Galdos Rivas, affectionately known as “The Wizard of Color,” will showcase some of his most acclaimed works, followed by a musical performance in his honor by his daughters, Martha and Blanca Galdos.

The Biennale will also pay a heartfelt tribute to the late Argentinian photographer and architect Raquel Big, featuring a posthumous award and a dedicated commemorative space.
